BIKRAM YOGA HOT IS HOT RIGHT NOW
The guru adored by celebrities – and his wife who would love to make yoga an Olympic sport
Devoted followers include George Clooney, Craig Martin Demi Moore and Madonna, with many Olympians incorporating Bikram as part of their daily training program.
As Yoga goes global, Bikram has taken the world by storm with now more than 5000 registered centres practising Bikram world-wide, it is the hottest form of Yoga ever. Hot as in 26 different postures practised in rooms with temperatures of over 100F.
Ten years ago, Bikram controversially patented his 26 signature yoga postures (he credits these exercises with helping him recover from crippling injuries suffered in a weight-lifting accident), so all Bikram yoga studios must pay a licensing fee to open, and monthly fees to run.
At the time Bikram Choudhury, patented his 26 yoga postures some years ago, Hindus were outraged, they argued that this type of Yoga has been practised dating back as far as 5,000 years. To claim ‘intellectual property’ rights would be like the equivalent of Christians trying to patent the Lord’s Prayer.
Yoga is a competitive sport in India. Rajashree Choudhury wife of Bikram, was the five-times winner of the All India Yoga Championship.
Bickram and Rajashree were both Yoga champions, it is not surprising that she wishes to make yoga accepted as an official Olympic sport. Who knows if that dream will come true for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Inspirational, get training now, for who knows Yoga could become a discipline in three years time.
